HAEMATOPATHOLGY

Hematopathology or hemopathology is the study of diseases and disorders affecting and found in blood cells, their production, and any organs and tissues involved in hematopoiesis, such as bone marrow, the spleen, and the thymus.

Hematopoiesis is the process through which the body manufactures blood cells.

Hematopathology is the study of diseases of the cells that make up our blood.

These cells originate in the bone marrow and become:

  • White blood cells
  • Red blood cells
  • Platelets

The Role of the Hematopathologist

  • Hematopathologists are specially trained to diagnose diseases of the blood cells. They use specialized tests such as flow cytometry studies and immunohistochemistry.
  • The hematopathologist uses the results of these tests to diagnose infections and diseases of the blood, lymph nodes and bone marrow.

Our faculty and staff provide consultation in hematopathology, bone marrow, cell markers and flow cytometry. We also offer an integrated report format which gives clinicians the ability to evaluate patients laboratory findings quickly and efficiently.

Diagnoses and treatment of diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma often deal with hematopathology; techniques and technologies include flow cytometry studies and immunohistochemistry.
