BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

Bone Marrow Transplant

Sanjeevani Cancer hospital is first amongst all the hospital to setup a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Chhattisgarh according to International guidelines.

The Bone Marrow Transplant unit at the hospital is having 3 Bone marrow transplant rooms possessing HEPA filters, dedicated to provide outstanding care and support to the patients who can be helped by transplantation therapy. The program provides transplant as a treatment option for a variety of acquired and congenital disorders of children and adults including acute and chronic blood conditions like Hematopoietic Malignancies, Anemia and Bleeding Disorders; and inherited immune deficiency syndromes and metabolic diseases.

The Department of Clinical Haematology and Haemato Oncology of the hospital looks after and treats people with blood related disorders.

These include Blood Cancers (Leukemia, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma), disorders associated with low Hemoglobin (various types of Anemia – including Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia), disorders of platelets like Thrombocytopenia,  bleeding disorders (Haemophilia and others), and other rare diseases.

In an autologous transplant, the patient’s own stem cells are collected during remission and transplanted back to form the healthy blood cells. Before transplantation, the patient is treated with high doses of chemotherapy or a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy to eliminate the diseased blood-producing cells remained in the bone marrow. Then, the collected stem cells are transplanted allowing the bone marrow to produce new cells.

During the procedure, the surgeon transplants the stem cells in the patient’s blood stream in a similar way that they would administer blood transfusion. These transplanted blood cells move to the narrow spaces of the bone and then produce new blood cells.
